Mega Man X - That Moment When by JesseDuRona Mega Man X - That Moment When by JesseDuRona
Hey guys and gals!

As some of you might already know, I'm co-editing a Super Nintendo anthology. This is the 1st page of a 3-page comic I'm doing about Mega Man X for it.

This one is a bit more personal for me, because I pulled from my own experiences playing the game back in 1994. See back it my day, we didn't have this fancy internet stuff to help us out as much as we do now. I spent days trying to beat just ONE boss (ANY boss), because I had to play by trail-and-error. This is the way it should be done, and I think I'm a better gamer for it, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating :P

If you want more information about the SNES anthology, check out this post I did here: despondent-mega-man.deviantart…

Mega Man X is Capcom

So first you go beat Storm Eagle, then Armored Armadillo, then Flame Mammoth?

Not exactly.  This piece is supposed to express that feeling of playing MMX for the first time.  You try out different stages, get your butt kicked, and then try a new one.  Before too long you figure out a pattern.  I haven't posted the next page yet, but it makes more sense after that :D

I hear ya, took me a lot of game overs to figure out the formula, I couldn't beat Storm Eagle without the speed upgrade from Chill Penguin's stage.

I remember Chill penguin was the first boss I ever beat... My cousin told me most of the enemies' weaknesses, but some of them are kind of a no brainer. Sigma was still hard as crap too.

Those bosses were really fun though.

MMX was my first Megaman game, and I learned the same way you did. I didn't get any of the other games until much later, but MMX has always been one of my favorite games.

Megaman X was a pretty tough game for me at first. But I eventually got the hang of it. It was one of my favorite childhood games back then. And it still has a great level of nostalgic value for me today even though its been so long ago now.

I always was pretty good at Megaman games.  I grew up with MM2 and continued playing them throughout.  X gave me a bit of trouble but not so much the bosses as Sigma.  Everything else was pretty easy.

But this comic...brought a smile to my face.  Cant wait to see the others!

Don't jump to conclusions. Mavericks are all about rejecting the rules -- maybe they use a different finger, just because.

I also like that wall element next to X's head impersonating a health bar.

Oh how I remember the endless amount of times I had to go through Storm Eagle's stage. T-T Hard times indeed.

I started with Chill Penguin on my first run before even checking the Internet. Obliterated everyone else afterwards (except maybe Launch Octopus, who was near impossible for me).

That sounds about right. Once you had the tornado and the helmet you could get the upgraded gun and the fire, and then you were unstoppable.

I remember I was, like, 5 when I tried to play my first X game. No idea what I was getting into when I fought the bosses. AND TO THIS DAY I WILL REFUSE TO USE THE INTERNET TO HELP ME WITH THE BOSSES! THAT'S MEGAMAN SACRILEGE!

Except for Overdrive Ostrich because he was kind of impossible at first.

Heh, we both have Mega Man X as our memorable experience!  Just goes to show how great that game is! ^^

Hey, does that mean I can post my submission on to my DA page?  Its like the only productive thing I've done in several months! XD

I just finished the mega man series this summer, and I haven't been using any cheats to beat the bosses. I went in blind, died a lot, and came out a winner. Well, I did use help for beating Wily in MM 7, but I hated that game anyway. In X3, I had to look up how to damage sigma, because I didn't know that I had to him him just above his head with a charged shot.  Cheating would've just ruined the experience I had and would've made the games extremely boring and tedious.

I know the feeling all too well. Even though the internet was probably a resource for me at the time I started playing Megaman in the early 2000's, I felt and still feel that's cheating.

I definitely wouldn't call it cheating.  I just think that part of the fun comes from experimenting.  When you kill your first boss, after hours of trying, it's incredibly satisfying.

Well, I gotta agree with you there. It wouldn't be near as fun and gratifying if you knew what to do when you needed to. Experimentation that made you want to tear your hair out at times actually I think would be more enjoyable, and gives you more personal experience than looking it up online. That I think is the best way to be a good Megaman player. ^^

I remember all of this from playing Mega Man X. Sting Chameleon always gave me the most trouble.

I made one of my villagers in Animal Crossing New Leaf say "Chill Penguin" as his greeting.
